Tattoo removal guide

How Many Sessions Does Tattoo Removal Take?

Why it's usually 6–12 sessions, what makes it more or fewer, and why they're spaced weeks apart.

Most tattoos take 6–12 laser sessions to remove, spaced 4–8 weeks apart. But that’s an average — your number depends on a handful of specific factors.

What decides your session count

  • Ink color: black and dark blue clear fastest; greens, light blues, and some yellows are stubborn and add sessions.
  • Amount & density of ink: a heavy, saturated piece takes more passes than fine linework.
  • Age of the tattoo: older ink has often begun to fade, which can mean fewer sessions.
  • Depth & who applied it: professional tattoos sit deeper and more uniformly than amateur ones.
  • Your skin & health: circulation and immune response affect how quickly your body clears the ink.
  • Location on the body: areas with better blood flow (closer to the heart) tend to clear faster than hands, feet, and ankles.

Why the gaps between sessions matter

The laser only breaks the ink apart — your body does the actual removal, carrying particles away over the following weeks. Spacing sessions 4–8 weeks apart gives that process time and lets the skin heal, which protects your results.

Fading vs. full removal

If your goal is a cover-up, you often need only 2–4 sessions to lighten the tattoo enough for a new design — far fewer than complete removal. Either way, you can preview the outcome before committing.
